Best Storage Beds for Small Bedrooms (UK 2026)
Updated for 2026 · Independent advice — nobody pays for a place in this guide.
In short: in a small UK bedroom, your bed is the largest storage opportunity you own. Ottoman beds give the most storage (the entire base interior) but need clearance above to lift. Divans with drawers give easy daily access but need 60 cm+ clear at the sides. Drawer bed frames sit between the two on looks. Measure your clearances before choosing — the wrong type in the wrong room is just an expensive ordinary bed.
British bedrooms are small and British wardrobes are smaller. The average UK box room barely fits a double bed with walking space around it, and built-in storage in new builds is famously mean. A storage bed turns the 4–5 square metres under your mattress — dead space in any ordinary bed — into the equivalent of a chest of drawers, or in the ottoman's case, considerably more.
But the three main types work very differently, need different clearances, and suit different sleepers. This guide compares them with real measurements so you buy the right mechanism for your room, not just the prettiest listing.

Full disclosure.
The three types, honestly compared
| Ottoman (lift-up) | Divan with drawers | Bed frame with drawers |
| Storage volume (double) | ~800–900 litres — the whole base | ~350–450 litres — 2–4 drawers | ~300–400 litres — usually 2 drawers |
| Access | Lift the mattress on gas pistons | Pull drawers from the side | Pull drawers from the side/foot |
| Clearance needed | Space above the bed to lift (nothing heavy on top) | 60 cm+ clear at drawer sides | 60 cm+ at drawer sides |
| Everyday convenience | Lower — lifting is a two-hand job | Excellent — grab and go | Excellent |
| Best stored inside | Bulky, rarely used: suitcases, spare duvets | Daily items: clothes, bedding | Daily items |
| Typical price (double) | £250–£600 | £180–£400 | £200–£500 |
| What breaks | Gas pistons (replaceable, ~£30) | Drawer runners and bases | Drawer runners |
Ottoman beds: maximum storage, with conditions
An ottoman's party trick is genuinely impressive: the entire base — every cubic centimetre under the mattress — becomes one huge storage compartment. For a double, that is roughly the capacity of a small wardrobe, hidden invisibly under your bed. If your problem is volume (spare duvets, suitcases, seasonal clothes, the Christmas decorations), nothing else comes close.
The conditions, honestly stated:
- You need clear air above the bed. The mattress lifts on gas pistons to about 35–40 degrees. Heavy bedside clutter, low shelves above the bed, or a sloped attic ceiling can all make lifting awkward or impossible. Measure the lift arc, not just the floor.
- It is a two-hand operation. Fine for weekly access; annoying for the socks you need every morning. Ottomans reward organisation: daily items in the wardrobe, bulky occasional items in the ottoman.
- Mattress weight matters. Gas pistons are rated for a weight range. A very heavy mattress (thick hybrids, some memory foam) on pistons rated for lighter loads will feel dangerously heavy to lift — and strains the mechanism. Check the rating before pairing a heavy mattress with a budget ottoman.
- Pistons wear out. Typically 5–8 years of regular use. Replacements cost around £30 and fit with basic tools — but budget sellers don't always stock the right size, so buy from a retailer with spare parts.
The dust question
Ottoman interiors are enclosed, which keeps dust out — a genuine advantage over under-bed boxes. But they can trap moisture in damp rooms. If your bedroom has condensation issues, add silica gel packs and air the compartment monthly. Divan drawers, being opened daily, ventilate themselves.
Divans with drawers: the everyday winner
Four drawers (two each side) in a double divan hold roughly 400 litres — less than an ottoman, but accessed in two seconds with one hand. For daily clothes, spare bedding and the general overflow of a small bedroom, drawers beat lift-ups on convenience every time.
The critical measurement: drawers need 60 cm of clear floor on each drawer side to pull fully out. In a box room with the bed against the wall, the wall-side drawers become decorative — you are paying for storage you cannot open. Configurations exist (two drawers on one side only, foot-end drawers), so match the drawer layout to your room layout, not the other way round.
Quality check that matters: pull the drawer fully out in the showroom (or check reviews for it). Cheap drawer bases are thin hardboard that sags under jumpers within a year; decent ones are solid or thick MDF. Drawer runner smoothness on day one predicts drawer survival in year five.
Bed frames with drawers: the looks option
Wooden or upholstered bed frames with built-in drawers give you divan-like storage with furniture looks — proper headboards, visible legs, a bed that reads as furniture rather than a base. Storage volume is similar to a divan (sometimes slightly less, as the frame structure eats space).
The trade-off is price: you are paying for joinery as well as storage, so drawer frames typically cost £50–£150 more than equivalent divans. Worth it if the bedroom is on show; unnecessary if it is purely functional.
What about under-bed boxes?
The cheap alternative: a standard bed plus rolling storage boxes underneath. Honestly? For very tight budgets it works — £30 of boxes under a £150 bed frame. But boxes collect dust, catch on carpet, and hold far less than built-in storage (typically 150–200 litres total). If you are buying a new bed anyway, built-in storage is worth the premium. If the bed is fine and you just need more space, boxes are the pragmatic answer.

Measuring checklist before you buy
- Drawer clearance: 60 cm+ of open floor on every drawer side. Tape it out on the floor.
- Ottoman lift arc: clear space above the bed — no low shelves, no heavy headboard clutter.
- Door and stair access: divan halves and ottoman bases are bulky single pieces; measure the route.
- Mattress pairing: if buying the base separately, check weight limits on ottoman pistons.
- What goes where: daily items → drawers; bulky occasional items → ottoman. Buy the mechanism that matches your stuff.

Storage bed FAQs
How much can you actually fit in an ottoman bed?
A double ottoman holds roughly 800–900 litres — think two large suitcases, two spare duvets, and several boxes of seasonal clothes. It is the single biggest hidden storage volume in a typical UK bedroom.
Are ottoman beds hard to lift?
A correctly rated gas-piston ottoman needs only light effort — the pistons do the work. If it feels heavy, the pistons are underrated for the mattress weight or wearing out. Never let children operate an ottoman unsupervised.
Do divan drawers work on carpet?
Yes — drawers slide on runners, not the floor, so carpet is no problem. Very deep-pile carpet can make the lowest drawer drag slightly; check the drawer clearance height (usually 20–25 cm) against your pile.
Storage bed vs wardrobe — which first?
If you have neither: a storage bed usually wins, because the bed footprint is already committed — the storage is effectively free floor space. A wardrobe costs additional floor area your small room may not have.
Can ottoman mechanisms be replaced?
Yes — gas pistons are standardised parts costing around £30 a pair, fitted with basic tools. Buy from retailers that stock spares; unbranded marketplace ottomans can leave you hunting for compatible parts in five years.
