Sleigh Bed vs Divan Bed: Which Should You Buy? (UK 2026)
Updated for 2026 · Independent advice — nobody pays for a place in this guide.
In short: choose a sleigh bed if you want a statement piece and have the floor space — the curved headboard and footboard need room to breathe. Choose a divan bed if you want storage, value for money, and a bed that fits smaller UK bedrooms. Most buyers who need storage are happier with a divan; most buyers who fall in love with a sleigh know it before they start shopping.
It is one of the most common bed-buying dilemmas in the UK, and it is really a question about what matters more to you: how the bed looks, or what the bed does. Sleigh beds and divan beds sit at opposite ends of that trade-off, and both are genuinely good beds — for different people, in different rooms, at different budgets.
This guide compares them honestly across the things that actually affect your daily life: style, storage, bedroom space, price, and the practical realities of delivery and assembly in British homes.

The 30-second answer
Buy a sleigh bed if…
- You want the bed to be the visual centrepiece of the room
- Your bedroom is at least 3 m × 3 m (the frame needs presence)
- You don't need under-bed storage — you have wardrobes sorted
- You love classic, hotel-style or romantic bedroom looks
Buy a divan bed if…
- You need storage — drawers or ottoman lift-up
- Your bedroom is small or awkwardly shaped
- You want the best value: base + mattress bundles are common
- You prefer a clean, modern look that disappears into the room
What exactly is a sleigh bed?
A sleigh bed is defined by its curved headboard and footboard, which sweep outward like the runners of a traditional sleigh — hence the name. The design dates back to 19th-century France and America, and it has never really gone out of fashion. Modern UK sleigh beds are usually upholstered in velvet or faux leather, often with deep buttoning (Chesterfield-style) on the headboard.
The key structural point: the headboard and footboard are part of the bed frame itself, and they are large. A double sleigh bed is typically 20–30 cm longer and 10–20 cm wider than the mattress it holds, because of the curved ends. That is the main practical trade-off of the style.
What exactly is a divan bed?
A divan is a simple upholstered base — essentially a sturdy box on legs or castors — with the mattress sitting directly on top. There is no protruding headboard or footboard (headboards are usually separate, attachable panels). The base itself is the storage: either drawers built into the sides, or an ottoman mechanism where the whole top lifts on gas pistons to reveal the full base interior.
Divans are the default bed in much of the UK for good reason: they are compact (the base is barely larger than the mattress), they are among the cheapest ways to get a bed with storage, and they are frequently sold as base-plus-mattress bundles that undercut buying the pieces separately.

Head-to-head comparison
| Sleigh bed | Divan bed |
| Style | Statement piece; curved, often buttoned | Understated; the bedding does the talking |
| Storage | Rarely any (some ottoman hybrids exist) | Excellent — drawers or full ottoman lift-up |
| Footprint (double) | ~170 × 220 cm — needs a bigger room | ~140 × 200 cm — close to mattress size |
| Typical price (double) | £250–£600+ | £150–£400 (often incl. mattress) |
| Mattress included? | Sometimes; often sold separately | Very often bundled |
| Assembly | Heavier; two-person job | Straightforward; lighter sections |
| Best for | Master bedrooms, style-led buyers | Small rooms, storage hunters, budgets |
Style: no contest, but be honest with yourself
If the look of the bed matters most, the sleigh wins and it is not close. A buttoned velvet sleigh headboard transforms a bedroom in a way a divan simply cannot — divans are designed to be looked past, sleighs are designed to be looked at.
The honest question is whether your room can carry it. A sleigh bed in a small box room looks like a ship in a bottle: impressive, but wrong. Sleigh beds need visual space around them — at least 60 cm clear on three sides — or the curves that make them beautiful just make the room feel crowded. If your bedroom is under 10 m², a divan with a tall, elegant headboard gives you 80% of the look with none of the spatial penalty. A separate headboard on a divan is also replaceable: change the headboard, change the room, keep the bed.
Storage: the divan's killer feature
This is where the comparison usually ends. A divan with four drawers swallows the equivalent of a small chest of drawers; an ottoman divan swallows more than most wardrobes' worth of bulky items — spare duvets, suitcases, winter coats. In UK homes, where the average bedroom has one built-in wardrobe if you are lucky, that storage is not a nice-to-have. It is the difference between a tidy room and a cluttered one.
Sleigh beds with storage exist — ottoman-style sleigh hybrids — but they are the exception, they cost more, and the lifting mechanism has to work around the curved frame, which makes it heavier to operate. If storage is on your requirements list at all, start with divans.
How much do you actually need?
Measure your room before deciding. Our free Bed Size Finder takes your room dimensions and tells you what bed size fits — including whether you have the clearance for drawer opening or ottoman lifting.
Space: measure the frame, not the mattress
The single biggest mistake sleigh buyers make is measuring for a double mattress (135 × 190 cm) and forgetting the frame. A typical double sleigh frame runs 165–175 cm wide and 215–225 cm long. In a 2.7 m-wide box room, that leaves you 50 cm on each side — enough to walk, not enough for bedside tables.
Divans are honest about their footprint: a double divan base is roughly 135 × 190 cm, essentially the mattress size plus upholstery. If your room is tight, the divan's 30 cm saving in each direction is the difference between a comfortable room and a cramped one.
Also consider the door: sleigh headboards are large single pieces. Victorian terraces with narrow staircases and 70 cm doorways have defeated many a sleigh delivery. Divan bases split into two halves specifically to get upstairs — a genuinely thoughtful piece of design.
Price: divans win on value
Like-for-like, divans cost less — and the gap widens because divans are so often sold as base-plus-mattress bundles. A decent double divan set with storage and a mattress can be had for under £300; an equivalent-quality sleigh with a separately bought mattress typically lands £100–£200 higher.
That said, price-per-year matters more than price. A well-made sleigh with a solid slatted base that lasts 12 years is better value than a cheap divan whose drawers jam in year three. Whatever type you choose, check the frame construction and guarantee before the price tag.

The decision flowchart
- Do you need under-bed storage? Yes → divan. No → continue.
- Is your bedroom under 12 m² or awkwardly shaped? Yes → divan (or divan + tall headboard). No → continue.
- Is the bed the room's centrepiece in your mind? Yes → sleigh. No → divan.
- Budget under £250 including mattress? Yes → divan set. No → either.
Most buyers land on divan by step 2 — and are happy. The buyers who reach step 3 answering "yes" tend to love their sleigh beds for a decade. There is no wrong answer, only a wrong answer for your room.
Sleigh vs divan FAQs
Are sleigh beds comfortable?
Comfort comes from the mattress, not the frame style — a sleigh with a good mattress sleeps exactly as well as a divan with the same mattress. The frame affects looks, space and storage, not sleep quality.
Do divan beds look cheap?
Not necessarily. A velvet or linen-look divan with a tall, well-chosen headboard looks smart and intentional. What looks cheap is a bare divan base with no headboard and a thin mattress — the same would be true of any bed dressed badly.
Can you get a sleigh bed with storage?
Ottoman-style sleigh hybrids exist, but they are uncommon, cost more, and the curved frame makes the lift mechanism heavier. If storage matters, a divan is the straightforward choice.
Which lasts longer, sleigh or divan?
Build quality matters more than style. A solid-frame sleigh and a solid-base divan both last 10+ years. Check for solid wood (not chipboard) frames, the guarantee length, and — for divans — drawer runner quality.
Will a sleigh bed fit up my stairs?
Measure first. Sleigh headboards are large single pieces and Victorian staircases defeat them regularly. Divan bases split in two for exactly this reason. If access is tight, confirm delivery terms before ordering.
